Progress in
health care industry expedites the integration on the web. Today,
almost 20 million American use the Internet to access health information.
Nearly half of all physicians in the country regularly use online
services.
The Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA),
signed in 1996, includes important new protections for individual's
health. HIPAA's new security standards will permit appropriate access
and use of an individual's health information by healthcare providers,
clearinghouses, and health plans while providing appropriate safeguards
against misuse and dissemination. HIPAA will also mandate a new
electronic signature standard for healthcare organizations when
an electronic signature is employed in the transmission of a HIPAA
standard transaction. The purpose of HIPAA Security and Electronic
Signature standards is to protect the confidentiality, integrity
and availability of individual health information.
